September in the City
It’s September in the city and
I feel the fall’s first breath
In wind among the tree tops
Where the branches still with leaves
Sound like angry ocean surging overhead
Lights are flickering in the darkness
As the electric power flinches
Some swinging overhead supply line
Or perhaps a small transformer grounded
And there‘s going to be a blackout
Above the tree top stars still shining
And there isn’t any rain yet
So the sidewalks are quite dry
But I better shut the window close now
In case it starts while I’m asleep
There is something rather reassuring
In the sound of changing seasons
While at the same time it’s exciting
How it whips that tall leaning pine tree
Dropping needles on my car
I like the sound of autumn
After all the summer’s heat
I’m glad it’s time to change the weather
To bring out my long sleeved shirts.
Halloween is just a breath away
And it’s Thanksgiving after that
